Your CLA uses a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which behaves nothing like a traditional automatic at low speed. Two wet clutches sit bathed in a specific Mercedes fluid, and that fluid both cools the clutches and feeds the controls. Worn or old fluid shows first as a jerk or shudder pulling away from a stop, or a hesitation in slow traffic. The fluid and filter need service on an interval, with the exact Mercedes specification and a precise fill level. The Heated Thermostat And Cooling Leaks

Cooling on this turbo four-cylinder runs through an electrically heated thermostat that the engine computer controls. When that thermostat fails, the engine can overheat in traffic or run too cold and lose both heat and fuel economy. Its plastic housing also cracks with age and seeps coolant that dries on the block before it reaches the ground. A check-engine light for coolant temperature is a common first sign that the thermostat is no longer holding range. This engine sprays fuel straight into the cylinders, which leaves the backs of the intake valves unwashed. Oil vapor and combustion residue bake onto those valves over the miles and harden into a crust that chokes airflow. Carbon builds slowly into a rough idle, a stumble under acceleration, and a misfire code on the colder cylinders. No fuel additive reaches that crust, because the fuel never touches the valve backs on this engine. Cleaning means pulling the intake and blasting the carbon off the valves with walnut-shell media, then resealing the manifold.

A Timing Chain That Lives On Clean Oil

The same four-cylinder drives its camshafts with a timing chain that depends on a steady supply of clean oil. Skipped oil changes or long intervals let the chain wear and stretch, which slips the cam timing out of its set range. A stretched chain logs camshaft correlation codes and can rattle on a cold start before the oil pressure builds. Variable valve timing adjusters on this engine wear as well and add their own faults. Regular oil service on the correct grade is the cheapest protection this chain ever gets. We check the chain for stretch and read the cam timing values whenever a CLA comes in with a rough cold start.
